張子虎は「千里行って千里帰る」の縁起につながるといわれ、子供の健やかな成長を願うために飾るものです。

三豊の張子虎は独特でユニークな表情をしていて、眉間から頬を通り口元ね伸びる黒い毛並みは、虎というよりも人の顔に近い印象なのが特徴です。

昭和60年に香川県伝統工芸品に指定されました。製法・原材料などは当時から今も変わらず、ひとつひとつ職人さんの丁寧な手仕事によって作られています。

原材料：和紙(江戸末期～明治中期までの教科書)　・　胡粉(牡蠣の殻を砕いた白色顔料粉)・膠(にかわ)　・　顔料　・　硝子玉　・　馬毛　・　ワニス。

Hariko Tiger (Papier-mâché Tiger)

The Hariko Tiger is traditionally displayed as a charm for children’s healthy growth, symbolizing the saying “Travel a thousand miles and return a thousand miles.”

The Mitoyo Hariko Tiger is known for its distinctive and expressive look - the black stripes running from its brow to its cheeks and mouth give it a face that feels almost human rather than purely tiger-like.

Designated as a Traditional Craft of Kagawa Prefecture in 1985, each piece continues to be made today using the same methods and materials as when the craft was first established. Every tiger is carefully handcrafted by skilled artisans, giving each one a unique personality.

Materials: Japanese paper (repurposed from textbooks dating from the late Edo to mid-Meiji periods), gofun (white pigment made from crushed oyster shells), nikawa (animal glue), pigments, glass beads, horsehair, and varnish.
